Pohjoinen valo

Notes on light, film and long evenings in Helsinki

The blue hour lasts longer here

August 28

In late summer the sky above the harbour never quite goes dark. The blue hour stretches almost to midnight, and the long exposures come out softer than anything I get further south.

Shooting a box of expired film

July 14

A friend gave me a box of Portra that expired years ago. Overexposing by two stops kept most of the colour, although the greens drifted towards yellow in a way I have started to like.

A weekend in the archipelago

June 30

Three days of ferries, rocks and wind. Most frames are of water, which is either very boring or exactly the point.
